Imphal,March 30 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on Thursday assured that prepaid system in electricity would be introduced in the hills and 295 virgin villages in the hills would be electrified besides taking up steps to install high mass lighting system at all district headquarters and sub-divisional head quarters in the hills.
Appealing to get the benefit of Housing Scheme for all which the government would extend grant for construction of houses, Biren also said that the Centre has agreed to construct womens’ markets at the hill districts.
Chief Minister Biren was speaking to a group of 12 headmen from different Tangkhul villages in Ukhrul district under the association – Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long, Ukhrul, at his office chamber in Imphal on Thursday.
The President of ‘Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long’ Sweeten Raihing appreciated the Chief Minister for his hard work and commitment to serve the people of Manipur. He expressed that the Chief Minister would bring about peace and tremendous development for the people
of Manipur. With this new government, they hope all the different communities of Manipur once again began to live together in harmony.
Chief Minister Biren appealed to them to restore the unity, love and trust between hills and plain people which had preserved since time immemorial. He felt that he was the God’s messenger to bring peace and prosperity in Manipur. He said that as long as there is a trust, there would be integration of all the different communities in Manipur.
Talking about the welfare activities set for the hill people, the Chief Minister said that the new government would organize cabinet meetings in the hill district headquarters.
Ministers, Secretaries, Directors and Engineers would be asked to visit the hill districts for taking up welfare programmes for the hill people. After identification of beneficiaries of different schemes in the hills; the government would deliver the goods to the beneficiaries at their doorstep in the hills.
Narrating his meeting with the Prime Minister and other Ministers during his visit at the national capital recently; the Chief Minister stated that there would be air dispensary-ambulance helicopter service in Manipur for transportation of patients in the remote hill areas to Imphal for treatment. People living in hill areas were prone to cancer because of high incidence of using tobacco and smoke inhalation due to cold conditions. The Centre agreed to set up a 100 bedded Cancer hospital in Manipur. The State government was planning to set up the hospital at the foothills.
Biren, a National level footballer turned-Journalist turned-Politician who hails from Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai in Imphal East district, turned to politics and elected for the first time as an MLA from Heingang constituency on the regional Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party ticket in 2002 and the party later merged with Congress before the 2004 Assembly elections. He retained his Assembly seat in both 2007 and 2012. He left Congress and joined BJP on October 17, 2016 and re-elected from Heingang seat in the recently concluded assembly polls.
