Dimapur, June 30

Newly-elected Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs, Economics, and Statistics R Tohanba on Tuesday visited a number of blocks under the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and the waste dumping site located at Burma Camp. The politician interacted with the various colony leaders and officials during the visit.
Tohanba inaugurated two drainage areas at the Naga United block in Burma Camp. Drainages stretching 1200 feet and 540 feet, with a road length of 1500 feet were inaugurated during the visit.
Since January 2015, the DMC has been being undertaking various developmental works in the Dimapur where over the short period of time 6 roads, drainages, roads and waste bins at various localities have been constructed and inaugurated from income reportedly collated from collecting toll tax.
During the visit, it was also noted that the dumping area located in Burma Camp will soon be transformed into a ‘modern solid waste management system’. With the new system, only 10% of the waste will remain ‘for disposal after various recycles’. During a formal program that was conducted in the DMC’s office, the parliamentary secretary said that the municipal council of Dimapur was ‘better than any other municipalities of the state with its various progressive developmental projects take place covering all the major areas of the city’.
Impressed by the works undertaken by DMC under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Atokhe Aye, the politician said that ‘more major developmental schemes’ were being introduced under the newly formed department. The schemes will benefit the municipal councils to a great extend, he said.
Also, Tohanba said that the department of Municipal Affairs, Economics and Statistics which was recently formed will have three major schemes that would have the ‘ability to convert Dimapur into a smart city’. In order to bring major developmental changes in the city, concrete works should take place not only with the government officials but the public in general as well, the politician said. He said the society in general should discipline oneself and render major contributions towards the wellbeing of the society.
Another topic he broached was that ‘short cut’ and ‘easy way of doing works’ will never last long and that without reformation and co-operation among the public and officials the service rendered by the centre will not bring any changes.
Highlighting the newly-created Municipal Affairs department in Nagaland, Dr. Maongwati Aier said that the department was formed on April 1, 2015 in order to administrate municipal affairs. With the department’s formation, he said, ‘various internal matters’ involving the public will be directly dealt with by the department.
He added that the department of Municipal Affairs’ plan comprises entire Nagaland with a population of 1,980,602 (as per 2011 census) stretching across 16,579 kilometers and thee municipal councils in Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung and 16 town councils. They are directly under the purview of the Municipal affairs department, he said.
