Dimapur, April 16 (EMN): The Dimapur police have suspended an unspecified number of their personnel for what is understood to be highhandedness they exercised on unidentified youths at the “Dimapur stadium area” in Dimapur on April 12.
The city’s police establishment issued a press release on Sunday in relation to a recent video that went viral on social media. The video allegedly captured scenes that purportedly showed the police personnel rounding up a number of youths at the Dimapur state stadium and subjecting them to various forms of harassment such as making them to frog-jump. The youths, some of them reportedly juveniles, were caught allegedly drinking.
“An incident had occurred on 12.04.2017, wherein, certain personnel under Dimapur police while responding to reports of public nuisance at the Dimapur stadium area, acted in manners beyond their mandate,” the press release stated.
“It was unfortunate that certain videos recorded by the personnel went viral in the social media and as such, the act illegal.”
The police has clarified that “it does not subscribe to such conduct and actions. It does not condone the action and equally condemns the act of individual high handedness of certain personnel.”
The press release explained that “necessary disciplinary actions have being initiated” and the personnel involved “are being placed under suspension.”
The city’s police have assured the citizens that it will “continuously strive to conduct itself to ensure quality service” to the people and any “deviant behaviors or actions” by its members “will not be tolerated.”

Students’ flay alleged police highhandedness
The Tenyimi Students’ Union of Dimapur (TSUD) has also denounced the incident. The union issued a press release on Sunday stating that the alleged action of the police personnel ‘not only violated Section 21 of the Juvenile Justice Act…but, also shown high handedness in enforcing the law.’
‘The TSUD condemns the actions of police personals involved in the vedio which went viral in social media involving some teenager at Dimapur State Stadium clearly violating all the procedural norms,’ the press release stated.
While acknowledging the services of Dimapur police, the students have requested the authorities to take action against the police personal involved in the incident. “Those police personals have not only violated Section 21 of the Juvenile Justice Act, but, also shown high handedness in enforcing the law,” the union stated.
The union has expressed hope that the higher authorities would leave no stone unturned “in punishing those responsible and once again instilling respect and admiration the eyes of the public” for Dimapur police.
