GUWAHATI, JULY 29: The Federation of North Eastern Consumer Organisation (FONECO) today demanded immediate intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the bad condition of the Assam-Tripura National Highway.

FONECO, the apex body of consumer organisations of the eight north-eastern states, sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister narrating how Tripura is facing food and fuel shortage due to the bad condition of its lifeline – the Assam-Tripura National Highway.

The road has not been maintained as per national standard by the concerned agency which has resulted in this situation, said the memorandum, a copy of which was made available in the media.

It also claimed that a large number of trucks transporting essential commodities remained stuck in Assam’s Karimganj district, while many petrol pumps in Tripura remained closed without fuel.

Prices of essential commodities are increasing and it is feared that there shall be scarcity of fuel and other essential commodities in Tripura very soon, it said.

Urging the PM to repair the National Highway on a war footing, FONECO said the common people of Tripura were facing serious problems.

The consumer body also suggested that the Centre take up the issue with Bangladesh Government to allow transit of essential commodities for the common people of Tripura through the neighbouring country.

FONECO also submitted a copy of this memorandum to Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
