(EM Images)[/caption] Mokokchung, Dec. 28 (EMN): The Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Dr Imtiwapang Aier on Thur. said that the Naga society had been experiencing a “revolution of rising expectation’ where ‘hope is high but are often not realized, which result in cynicism.’ The NLA speaker was addressing the second-day of the centenary celebrations of Chami Baptist Arogo Women Ministry at Chami village, the smallest village in Asetkong range of Mokokchung district. Dr Aier observed that Naga society had been affected by corruption and conflict and by having lived through a period of ‘excessive pessimism and negativism.’ “People are becoming increasingly wary of corrupt leaders and demanding more accountability. It is a significant cause of failure of governance,” the speaker remarked. ‘Our society needs women’ In this connection, Dr Aier opined that to check and cleanse the state from corruption from the grass root, the force of women was important to bringing changes, from the old system to a new one. “Without women’s participation, be in politic, development or decision making; the world cannot move ahead,” he asserted. He added that apart from church activities, women should actively participate in politics ‘if they want changes in the society...’ If not, he said, the question of clean elections will be a futile exercise if not worse. Aier also called upon the Civil Society with a word of advice: ‘If they want to root out corruption from the grass root then they too must carry out with deep sincerity.’ He cautioned though that it should not be used as a platform to earn a place or ground. The speaker asserted that the bottlenecks in the way of women empowerment should be removed. “Gender empowerment” will be a powerful tool for eradicating corruption and to strengthen the government machinery in the state, he explained.
