Irrespective of caste, creed or religion every right-thinking person should welcome the recent Supreme Court verdict on Triple Talaq. Such a practice should have been abolished long ago. But it’s a pity that for various reasons it continued in our country for decades. There is no gainsaying that forward movement of the society depends upon the empowerment of women. If women are being treated as doormats, it will definitely weaken the society. Spread of moral education will be hampered. Anti-social activities will be on the rise. One may argue that Triple Talaq was confined to a particular religion, so the question of whole society being affected by the prevailing practice did not cut much ice. But the fact remains malfunctioning of even the smallest part of our body affects our health. Similarly, the existence of Triple Talaq was badly affecting our society though it was being practiced by merely 16 to 18 per cent of Indian population.

Before further entering in to the subject, it should be mentioned that the above opinion was influenced by the overall happening in the society. It was not formed by the stands taken by various political parties of the country. Rather, we firmly believe that Triple Talaq was social issue and it should be dealt by the society. If anyone wants to play politics with such a social issue should be condemned unequivocally. More, no political party should try to gain anything by using the Supreme Court judgement. Such an act should be considered as anti-national. Anyone who tries to spike the move to empower the women is not helping the nation. Rather he or she is weakening the nation.

But with all said and done, it must be made clear that that the fight for empowering the women is not over yet. Abolition of Triple Talaq is just a step towards achieving the goal. Some other issues should be resolved either by consultations among the stakeholders or with the help of the law to give the women proper place in the society. We will have to even address the issues for which preventive laws are already in place. For example, we have strict laws against Dahej and female foeticide. Notwithstanding the laws, these practices are rampant in major parts of the country. Because of Dahej, girl child is not welcome in the family. The moment a family comes to know that a girl child is going to be born, they make all possible and impossible efforts to abort the unborn. Even legal medical practitioners indulge in such practices as they earn huge money by aborting girl child. Moreover, abortion of girl child creates imbalance in society. Already Haryana is badly affected by the imbalance in sex-ratio. Few other states are heading towards the same crisis. So we should not be overjoyed by one success. Keeping the feet strongly on the ground, we should prepare ourselves for the next round of battle. As it is not an easy battle, it cannot be won overnight. The struggle should continue till it reaches to its logical culmination.
