Kohima, March 13 (EMN): With an aim to provide a platform for Naga artists to exhibit and sell their artworks, ‘One wall gallery’ was launched by Kohima Press Club (KPC) General Secretary Alice Lase Yhoshü at Dream Cafe in Kohima, on March 13. The weeklong exhibition will display the works of three Naga artists—H Akup Buchemhu, Ruokuoselhou Maichieo, and Neiphrezo Ezung.

For many years there was no proper place for artists from the state to sell their artworks, so ‘One wall gallery’ was initiated to dedicate to the Naga artists, said Theja Meru, an entrepreneur, musician and proprietor of Dream Cafe. Meru, who initiated the art gallery, felt the need to create a platform for artists to showcase their works as there has been ‘many cases’ of artists in the state who ‘give-up halfway’ through their career.

Earlier this year, the three artists were selected for an exposure trip to the Savannah College of Art and Design (better known as SCAD) Hong Kong. The money sold from their artworks will support in their journey to Hong Kong. Therefore, Meru encouraged the patrons and people of Nagas to come forward and buy the paintings that start from INR 100-INR 500 and will be opened for sale till March 20 from 10am-5pm.

Speaking of Dream Cafe, Meru said the youth of Nagaland have been “our inspiration” and that the cafe will complete 16 years of its inception in May this year.

Yhoshü, who was the guest of honours of the day, said: “Nagaland may still be a tough place to sell art, but art was, is and will always be a powerful tool to connect and build bridges between people.” She went on to say that the meeting is “much more than just the opening of a gallery or an exhibition… I believe this is a celebration of a milestone for Dream Cafe also.”

She congratulated Meru and his team for “having steered many dreams through Dream Cafe for the past 15 years, especially the dreams of young musicians…till today, at this point where you’re opening your doors for artists too.” She also congratulated the three artists whose works are on display.

In an interaction with the media personnel, artists H Akup Buchemhu (33) said that it was a “big surprise package” on being selected to represent Nagaland to SCAD, Hong Kong and that the exposure will include interactions of three hours theory and another three hours of practical artworks.

He felt that there is “a lot of scope” when it comes to art in Nagaland, yet the people are not expose to it. One has to be open-minded towards any form of artworks, he said.
