One killed as gunmen open fire on trucks in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 12: One person was killed while three others including a truck driver sustained injuries during a firing by armed miscreants near a hill village under Noney police station in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Thursday, reports reaching here said.
The incident took place when a number of goods trucks from Jiribam side besides and a car were passing the Lukhambi (Khumji) village area of the economic blockade-hit Imphal-Jiribam highway of National Highway 37 at around 4.30 in the afternoon, sources said.
Security forces guarding the goods trucks also retaliated.
The injured persons have been identified as Jacky Kamei (30) of Tamenglong town, Thuanilung Kamei (31) of Tobam (Irang) village both under Tamenglong district and Nripen Kalita (24) of Khatkhati in Assam. They were given first aid at the 8th Assam Rifles unit hospital and subsequently evacuated to well-equipped hospitals in Imphal for treatment, it added.
The deceased was identified as one Dikhuanang Gonmei of Tamenglong town who reportedly died at the spot during the incident and two other injured persons, a Jacky and a Thuanilung, were said to be the occupants of the car while Nripen happened to be a driver of one the goods trucks.
The movement of the trucks resumed after a gap of about two hours under tight security cover, reports added.
