One dies in Manipur; JE suspect

IMPHAL, July 27: Following the death of a suspected Japanese Encephalitis (JE) patient and widespread report of school children suffering from viral fever following the detection of JE cases in Manipur, district authority of Churachandpur bordering Mizoram and Myanmar directed to close down all the educational institutions “to prevent the spread of the virus” for a week.
Deputy Commissioner Lunminthang Haokip of Churachandpur district issued a notice in this regard on Wednesday.
Meanwhile the mortal remains of JE suspect T Donglianpau, Head master of Vimala Raina high school of Bungmual, Churachandpur district who passed away at RIMS hospital in Imphal was sent to his hometown on Wednesday for further traditional rites.
On July 22, the health services authority confirmed the detection of nine JE cases in the State. The number of positive cases rose to 12 the following day.
Earlier when contacted, Health Minister DK Korungthang said there is no need to panic as all possible precautionary measures have been taken to tackle the situation. Stating that it is not an outbreak and fogging had already been done in the localities of the infected persons to exterminate mosquitoes, the Minister said that necessary instructions have been given to admit the suspected JE cases for treatment.
