Dimapur, Dec. 6: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has begun screening individuals aspiring to be the party’s candidates in Manipur to contest in the state’s forthcoming elections. The party has finalized six candidates thus far, the organization informed in a press release that was issued on Tuesday.

The party’s media cell informed of a meeting on Tuesday in which Chief Minister TR Zeliang and Education Minister Itachu (in-charge of Manipur’s NPF unit) were stated to have attended.

The individuals who applied for the NPF’s ticket to contest in the forthcoming Manipur state general elections in early 2017 were examined during the meeting, it was informed.
The event was at the NPF’s central office in Kohima town. The meeting was president over by NPF President Dr Shürhozelie Liezetzsu.

The Manipur unit will be contesting 15 assembly constituencies, the party said. 37 ‘intending party men’ have applied for a ticket. For the 41-Chandel assembly constituency alone, eight members have applied for the ticket, the press release stated.

“The ticket issue finalization appears to be unavoidably crucial, considering competing number of contestants. At least, the case of 6 A / C. candidature have been cleared, and efforts are on to finalize the remaining without causing undue delay, and announcement and distribution of the tickets are to be done simultaneously, party President Dr Liezetsu informed,” the party stated.

Zeliang, Itachu, and Dr Liezetsu were stated to have explained “the difficult position of the party, making it clear that ticket will go to only one candidate and appealed all aspiring candidates to abide by their commitments to abide by the rules and regulation of the party constitution and work in support of the NPF candidate whoever gets the ticket.”

The president of the Manipur unit, Awangbow, introduced the ‘ticket seekers’ who had come to attend the consultative meeting, the party stated. He expressed confidence that the NPF’s candidates would be elected.
