Ukhrul, Jan 8: Naga People’s Front (NPF) has exuded confidence of winning the Phungyar assembly
seat in the ensuing 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.

‘The ensuing assembly elections will be different from the previous years at Phungyar assembly constituency,’ said NPF president of 43 Phungyar area unit SP Chuimeingam in a press conference held at Ukhrul recently. He said NPF is ready for the elections considering the works done by NPF and the people’s response at Phungyar assembly constituency. He, however, said the ball now lies with the party leaders in issuing ticket to the candidate which the people of the area have faith.

‘We have faith on the NPF leaders, likewise we expect the leaders to have faith on the people and respect the people’s choice of candidate,’ Chuimeingam said. He added that NPF Phungyar area unit executive firmly believed that NPF will emerge victorious this time.

Phungyar assembly constituency in the recently created Kamjong district is the home turf of the veteran Congress strongman Rishang Keishing and his son Victor Keishing, the present Parliamentary Secretary in the Ibobi Singh led Congress government. Congress had won the 43 Phungyar assembly constituency eight times since Manipur statehood. In the last assembly election, NPF came second in the elections.

The press conference held at Ukhrul District Working Journalist Office was attended by the 43 Phungyar area NPF Unit president SP Chuireingam, general secretary Khayao Hungyo and other party executives.

NPF, Congress and BJP are likely to have a triangular fight for the Phungyar seat. Phungyar constituency, included in the second phase of the recently announced Manipur elections, will go to poll on March 8.

The recently created Kamjong district, carved out from Ukhrul district by the Congress led Manipur government is likely to have impact in the coming Manipur assembly elections. While the Congress manoeuvre the creation as political strategy to retain Congress government in the state, the overwhelming opposition by Naga people is likely to boost NPF and emerge victorious in Naga dominated areas of the State including Phungyar seat.
