Nagaland Legal Services Authority (NLSA), under the aegis of Justice and Law Department, had organised a programme on “Access to Justice for All” on June 27 at DC conference hall, where Mayang Lima, former Member Secretary, NSLSA & District & Sessions Judge, Mon, was the speaker.The programme was chaired by Mrs. Nino Iralu, Member Secretary, NSLSA, who delivered the welcome address and also introduced the purpose of the programme. She stated that the programme was one way of gathering all the District Legal Services Authorities and also to share the rich experiences of our former Member Secretary.
Representatives from all the Districts Legal Services Authority including the chairmen/ secretaries, panel lawyers, PLVs and law college students attended the programme.
The speaker, Mayang Lima, spoke on the topic “Access to justice for all,” wherein he highlighted that the Supreme Court of India as well as the High Court have several committees to look into legal aid matters. He stated that in Nagaland many districts do not even have a bar for which it was centralized and appointed Retainer Lawyers to look into the different districts to carry out the legal aid work and cases. He said further added that Legal Aid Scheme came into being in the year 2011, which was later extended to Law Colleges and Universities to make justice for all accessible to all the common men.
He rued that the State is yet to set up Special Homes in the districts of Nagaland except the home at Pherima. He stressed the need to train the Police Personnel to handle the Juvenile cases. He said that the Ministry of Law & Justice is well to sponsor anyone who wants to compile the judgement of the Customary Courts that has been upheld by the High Court and the Supreme Court.
Nino Iralu, in conclusion, extended her gratitude to Kohima District Legal Services Authority for the success of the programme and Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, for providing the conference hall.
