Govt seeks holistic approach from Asia-Pacific region for Digital India

New Delhi, August 21 (IANS): Communications Minister Manoj Sinha on Monday called for holistic planning rather than a piecemeal approach to achieve the vision of Digital India and sought a collaborative approach by the Asia-Pacific governments. He was speaking at a seminar organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Talking about India’s vision of digitalisation, Sinha stressed on three key visions. He mentioned about providing digital infrastructure to every individual in India, providing government services on demand via digital platforms which in turn will promote employment opportunities, education and better e-governance and finally eradication of the digital divide.

3 injured after rocks fall on Hubli Express

Mumbai, August 21 (IANS): At least three passengers of the Hubli Express were injured near the Khandala Ghat in Maharashtra when rocks from a mountain fell on the train following a landslide, officials said on Monday. There were no rail traffic disruption though.According to a Central Railway official, the incident occurred at around 5.30 a.m. between the Lonavala-Karjat section when the train was passing through the Khandala Monkey Hills. “The rock fell on the S4 coach. Its arrival was delayed by an hour here at the Lokmanya Tilak terminal,” Central Railway spokesperson Narendra Patil told IANS. The injured were rushed to the Kalyan railway hospital. Two of them have received minor injuries while the third one is in a state of shock right now, Patil said.

5 policemen suspended for dereliction of duty

Patna, August 21 (PTI): Five policemen, including two Inspector rank officials, were today suspended for dereliction of duty as supporters of senior JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav had tried to enter the Chief Minister’s residence on Saturday waving belts and sticks. Station House Officer of Sachivalay police station, under which CM’s residence comes, a Sergeant Major of police line, two Sub Inspectors and one Assistant Sub-Inspector have been put under suspension on the charge of dereliction of duty, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj told PTI. The suspension was ordered by Patna zone Inspector General of Police N H Khan on the basis of the report of the SSP.

Girl gang-raped at home by robbers

Gwalior, August 21 (PTI): An 18-year-old girl was allegedly raped by unidentified robbers in Mahalgaon area of the city, police said. Four men barged into the family’s house early morning yesterday, apparently with the intention of committing robbery, but after entering, they confined the girl’s father and her nine-year-old brother to a room at gun-point, and three of them raped her. Later they decamped with Rs 50,000 in cash and gold and silver ornaments, said city superintendent of police V S Raghuwanshi. A case of gang-rape and robbery has been registered under the Indian Penal Code and further probe is on, he said.

Man robbed of Rs 15 lakh in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, August 21 (PTI): A man was allegedly robbed of Rs 15 lakh at gunpoint by four bike-borne assailants near the Vasundhra Police Outpost at the Hindon Canal River here, the police said today. The incident occurred when the victim, a collection agent, was going to deposit the money in a bank after collecting it from outlets of different companies, Senior Superintendent of Police H N Singh said. The assailants snatched his bag and hit his head with the butt of a pistol. The incident took place around 1 pm, the officer said. The police are scanning CCTV camera footage to identify the accused, the SSP said.

Srijan scam accused dies in Bihar hospital

Patna, August 21 (IANS): Mahesh Mandal, one of the accused arrested in the Rs 1,000 crore Srijan scam in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district has died in a hospital, police said on Monday. Mandal’s condition deteriorated and he died late on Sunday night. Bhagalpur senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar told IANS over telephone: “Mandal was not keeping well after his arrest. He had some kidney problem.” The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has raised questions over Mandal’s sudden demise. He said this might have been done to suppress evidence and information that Mandal could have revealed. The Srijan scam involves a Bhagalpur-based NGO, Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Limited, which used to provide vocational training to women.
