Security beefed up in view of Independence Day celebrations

Aizawl, August 11 (PTI): Security has been beefed up in Mizoram in view of the coming Independence day celebrations in the state, a senior police officer said today. Superintendent of Police of Aizawl, Neihchungnunga told PTI that though there was no specific threat from any terrorist or militant groups, elaborate security arrangements were made to ensure peaceful celebrations of the Independence day. He said that strict vigil has been maintained in important government offices and vital installations while security was also beefed up in the Lengpui airport near Aizawl. Bomb disposal squad would thoroughly examine the Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl where the main function would be held, he said.

‘MNF would oppose proposed amendment to Citizenship Act’

Aizawl, August 11 (PTI): Former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga today said that the Mizo National Front (MNF) would oppose the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act. Zoramthanga, chief of the MNF, a constituent of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) supporting the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, while addressing party workers at ‘Hnam Run’ said that the party would never accept the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016. “All the north eastern states should join hands in opposing the proposed amendment,” he said, adding that the amendment bill was likely to be deliberated in the coming winter session of the Parliament. He suggested that all the NGOs, student organisations, all political parties and the state government should come together and make concerted efforts on the issue.

Three-day programme for Independence Day in Assam

Guwahati, August 11 (PTI): The Assam Government will observe the 71st Independence Day with a three-day programme in a befitting manner throughout the state. All the Deputy Commissioners and Sub-Divisional Officers are directed to celebrate the occasion by organising various programmes in their respective Headquarters for three days beginning August 13.As per the programme, events such as extempore speech, drawing, music and other similar competitions will be held among school students and the prizes for the winners will be given at the Independence Day function, said a government release here today. Similarly, on August 14 ‘Run for National Integrity’ will be organised in all Circles, Blocks, District and Sub-Divisional Headquarters. Sports competitions will also be organised among children and youth on the 13th and 14th of this month with the prizes distributed in the main function of Independence Day on 15th August, the release added.

Arunachal BJP unit breaks relation with PPA

Itanagar, August 11 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh BJP unit has severed relations with its North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) partner, the Peoples Party of Arunachal (PPA). The announcement to this effect was made by state BJP president Tapir Gao during the state executive meeting of the party here yesterday. NEDA Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma passed on the decision of the BJP central leaders to break alliance with PPA to Gao, who made the announcement yesterday, a party release informed here today. “The BJP will treat PPA at par with the Congress as an opponent political party,” the release added. The BJP has 47 MLAs in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly with effective strength of 59 with two independents supporting the party. The PPA has nine MLAs and the Congress has one legislator. The NEDA was formed on May 24, 2016 by BJP along with regional political parties like Naga People’s Front, Sikkim Democratic Front, People’s Party of Arunachal, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front in Northeast India. The NEDA was formed to protect the interest of the people of the region and also for uniting non-Congress parties in the North-east.

Eight strategic reforms mooted for skill development in Arunachal

Itanagar, August 11 (IANS): Eight strategic reforms have been recommended for skill development in Arunachal Pradesh. In its report released on Friday by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi) recommended strengthening the framework currently governing the skill development ecosystem, improving the effectiveness and utilization of existing technical vocational education and training institutions, making provisions for providing specialized skill development training in identified sectors relevant to the state.It also suggested making the general education provided in schools an integral part of skill development efforts by improving the quality and learning outcomes of school education, creating robust ecosystem of creditable private vocational training providers, improving linkages between industry and institutions providing skill development, strengthening the handloom and handicrafts sector and making extensive provisions for career counselling and information dissemination.Khandu said the report will serve as a roadmap for the state government to plan its future course of action in imparting skill development to the youth of the state.
