Murder accused policeman surrenders in Meghalaya

Shillong, August 4 (IANS): A Meghalaya Police constable, accused of shooting his senior in the West Jaintia Hills district, has surrendered without depositing his service rifle, police said on Friday. Constable Lusen Sangma of the 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion, surrendered at Kharkutta police station on Thursday after absconding for four days, district police chief R. Muthu told IANS. Muthu said Sangma has been arrested on charges of murder and in an arms case. “He came empty handed and stated that the self-loading rifle he decamped with has been dropped somewhere. We are searching for the rifle now,” the officer said. On Sunday, Sangma in an inebriated state fired at Havildar Litsingh Inghi from close range. Inghi succumbed on his way to the hospital.

Man held for sexually abusing daughter’s friend

Gangtok, August 4 (PTI): One person was arrested today on the charge of sexually assaulting a minor girl, his daughter’s friend, for several days, police said. The 44-year-old man was arrested from Nayabazar in West district of Sikkim after the victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police. He allegedly had clicked some nude photos of the girl when she was bathing at her friend’s residence during one of her visits, police said. The accused sexually assaulted her repeatedly threatening her that otherwise he would circulate those photos in the Internet, police said. At one point of time, the girl told her family about it and a police complaint was lodged. A case under POCSO Act has been registered against the accused, police said.

Heroin worth Rs 10 lakh seized in Mizoram, 2 arrested

Aizawl, Aug 4 (PTI): The Mizoram police recovered 318 grams of heroin from a motorcycle in Lunglei district and arrested two Myanmarese nationals in this connection. The police said, the contraband worth around Rs 10 lakh, was found hidden in the motorcycle near Pukpui village yesterday. It was reportedly smuggled from Leilet hamlet in Myanmar. Lalmawia (22) and Vanlalenga (30), both residents of Leilet hamlet, were arrested and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and Foreigners’ Act. Meanwhile, 3.059 kg heroin had been seized by the state Excise and Narcotics Department alone during January to June, the records of the department said. The department officials had seized 4.039 kg and 4.088 kg of heroin in 2016 and 2015 respectively, the department officials said.

ONGC appoints S D Maske as new Assam Asset Manager

Guwahati, August 4 (PTI): State-run ONGC today said it has appointed S D Maske as the new Assam Asset Manager with immediate effect. “S D Maske has taken over the charge of Asset Manager, ONGC Assam Asset,” ONGC said in a statement. Prior to this, he was the head of engineering services at ONGC Rajahmundry Asset. “Earlier, before taking over, Maske also called upon the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of Commerce & Industry, Transport and Parliamentary Affairs of Assam Chandra Mohan Patowary,” the company said. Maske comes with an experience of over 36 years and exposure in almost all facets of ONGC’s operations — engineering, exploration, production, project management, audit and human resource management at multiple locations like Rajahmundry, Tripura, Goa, Ankleshwar and Mumbai.

GST feedback meeting held in Diphu

After the implementation of Good and Service Tax (GST) by the government of India, the government of Assam has sent H.Z Hazarika, IAS, Secretary of Panchayat & Rural Development (P&RD) to Karbi Anglong District in order to get the feedback of GST from different section of peoples including traders, whole sellers, retailers, dealers etc. GST feedback meeting was held today at Diphu Circuit House. The visit was especially to extract the problems and grievances faced by the businessmen. An interaction was also held between the businessmen and government official of GST. In the meeting Pegu, said that if any of the businessmen faced problems they can write a letter and send it to him. The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Karbi Anglong Adil Khan. Dr. Mary Monjir Engtipi, Superintendent Tax, Diphu and Tuleshwar Pegu, Superintendent Tax, Diphu were attended in the meet.

Killer police constable arrested

Shillong, August 4 (PTI): A Meghalaya police constable, Lusen A Sangma, who shot dead his senior colleague earlier this week at a police battalion camp in West Jaintia Hills district, has surrendered in North Garo Hills district. The wanted constable surrendered at Kharkutta PS in North Garo Hills. He was arrested and brought to where he committed the crime, West Jaintia Hills district SP R Muthu said. Lusen Sangma was in a drunken state when he stormed into the top-floor room of the havildar and fired about six rounds from his weapon. by firing another 15 rounds in the air. The SP said the police was investigating what prompted the constable to shoot dead his colleague.
