A new quarantine check post by the veterinary department has been inaugurated for the district.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, S Chuba Longkumer on Thursday inaugurated the Veterinary Health Centre and Quarantine Check Post at Lotovi village under Dimapur district.
During a short inaugural programme that was conducted in the village to mark the occasion, the parliamentary secretary said that ‘check gates’ which were once considered ‘unfriendly gestures’ among the people in the past, have now become important components knowing the benefits they provide in various ways.
Through the check gate, the veterinary department aims to render clean and disease-free animals that come into the state of Nagaland from outside, said the chief guest.
According to Longkumer, along with ‘proper inflow of animals’ the state will have good health and good businesses as well. Lamenting the poor business acumen and the ‘poor mentality’ of the Naga people, the parliamentary secretary said that ‘Nagas are greedy in business’ who seek ‘profit immediately’ only. The Naga people do not have the patience to run businesses and this failing leads to failure in the state’s economy, said S Chuba Longkumer. If the Nagas in general give importance to businesses, development will surly take place in the state.
Also, speaking about the importance of the role played by villages in the development of the state, S Chuba Longkumer said if villagers involve in decision-making for the growth of the state, Nagaland will grow tremendously.
He added though, that only ‘unity and cooperation’ among the people will bring peace and development.
Also, the director for Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Thungchamo Ezung, spoke in his speech about the importance of having veterinary check posts in the state. He said that the check post was being opened in order to ‘check animals coming from other states while controlling the inflow of new diseases that might be detrimental to the health of the citizens of the region.
The director also suggested that instead of buying animals from other states for consumption, rearing livestock within Nagaland would be more productive and add to the growth of the local economy.
He has challenged villagers to try and rear livestock for the welfare of the society ‘while aiming to rear and consume organic foods.’
The GB of Lotovi village also conveyed gratitude for the initiative. The village’s leaders have stressed on the need to introduce animal husbandry initiatives for the uneducated men and women of the village.
