Dimapur, August 1 (EMN): Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio today accepted the role of the interim president of the NPF party that was conferred on him by the 36 NPF legislators on July 31 stating that he is humbled by the decision and at the same time reiterating the party’s stand on the peace process.
“I am humbled by the decision of the NPF along with the legislators’ wing of the party and the majority who are with the government for electing me as the interim president” stated a press note from the MP.
As reiterated constantly by him during his days as the chief minister he did not mince words on the stand of the party with regard to the peace process.
“I want to make it clear that we remain committed to the manifestos of 2008 and 2013 where we have categorically declared that we will pave the way for a political solution that is honourable and acceptable to the people.
My stand on these commitments remain unchanged till today.
I take this opportunity to appeal to the negotiating parties of the ongoing Indo-Naga peace process, especially the Government of India, to bring early solution that is honourable and that which respects the political rights and unique history of the Naga people,” he stated.
He also stated that the party had of late deviated from the “sacred commitments” given to the people in the election manifestos of 2008 and 2013.
“Rather, the party had been running under a dictatorial environment. Inner party democracy, reflection of the people’s voice and the spirit of unity were totally undermined as the party was operated by few individuals with self-interest.”
He also made an appeal to the party rank and file to come and join the mainstream party fold and the “majority group who are with the government.”
“We must all forget the past in the greater interest of our people, and join hands, so that, together we can restore the image and direction of the party and regain the hope and confidence of our people,” he stated.
He also recounted his decision to leave state politics but alleged of sections in the party that worked against him.
” It is pertinent to point out that when I joined Parliament, sections in the party did everything possible to obstruct my initiatives and also made all out efforts to sideline me and remove me from the party to the extent of even suspending me. However, I remained steadfast in my faith and belief on the ideology and principles of the party and continued to work tirelessly on the responsibilities bestowed upon me by the masses, ” he stated.
He appealed to all party men and women to come under one umbrella and move forward along with the government and take the party towards greater heights.
“I want to make it clear that I hold no grudge against anyone in any manner and look forward to the cooperation of all sections, in our common endeavour of serving our people. ” he further stated.
