HC sets aside Praful Patel’s election as AIFF president

New Delhi, Oct. 31 (IANS): The Delhi HIgh Court on Tuesday set aside the election of Praful Patel as president of All India Football Federation (AIFF) and asked for fresh polls within five months. A bench headed Justice Ravindra Bhat also appointed former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi the administrator of the AIFF. The court, scrapping the election of executive members of AIFF, said that election was conducted without following the National Sports Code.

LeT module busted in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct. 31 (IANS): The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said it had busted a module of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group in Kupwara district by arresting six men. The six were described as “overground workers” — those who operate as eyes and ears of the group. They also provide logistic support to the militants.

Six killed in transformer blast in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Oct. 31 (IANS): Six persons were killed while at least 15 others were injured when a transformer exploded during a marriage function in a village in Jaipur district on Tuesday afternoon, a Rajasthan minister said. “Six have died so far in the incident that happened while a marriage function was going on the Khatolai village. All were due to burn injuries and out of 15 injured, 10-11 are in critical condition. They have been admitted in the SMS Hospital here,” state Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf told reporters here on Tuesday. The village is near Shahpura town, 65 km from here. Saraf said 18 people were brought here, out of which one child was declared dead by doctors here, and two after being given first aid were discharged.

Karnataka gets first woman police chief

Bengaluru, Oct. 31 (IANS): Neelamani N. Raju, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1983 batch, has been appointed the first woman Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG-IGP) of Karnataka, it was announced on Tuesday. She succeeds Rupak Kumar Dutta, who is retiring. Raju, 57, was earlier the Director General of Police – Internal Security. “Congratulations to Karnataka’s first woman DG-IGP… Wish her a successful tenure,” tweeted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

School bus catches fire in Delhi, students rescued

New Delhi, Oct. 31 (IANS): Thirty-seven students narrowly escaped a tragedy when a bus in which they were travelling caught fire here on Tuesday, officials said. The private bus caught fire while heading from Delhi Cantonment to south Delhi. It was carrying the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya’s Naraina branch when the incident occurred near Dhaula Kuan, a fire official said. None of the students suffered any injuries as bystanders came to their rescue. Three fire tenders doused the flames but by then the vehicle was gutted. The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained.
