President of Cyprus to arrive on 5-day India visit today

New Delhi, April 24 (PTI): Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades will arrive in India on Tuesday on a five-day visit during which he is slated to meet President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his stay in India, Anastasiades is expected to sign several bilateral agreements. “This is the first visit of President Anastasiades to India. Earlier, he had substantive meetings with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2015,” a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said.

PDP leader killed in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 24 (IANS): Militants on Monday shot dead a District President of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Police said the militants fired at Abdul Gani Dar when he was travelling in a vehicle near Pingalana village. “He was shifted to Srinagar for treatment but he succumbed to injuries,” a police officer said. Dar headed the PDP in Pulwama district.

Punjab CM approves setting up of Anti-Terror Squad

Chandigarh, April 24 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday approved the setting up of an Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), as part of the Intelligence Wing, to break the nexus between militants and gangsters in the state’s prisons. The government is also mulling an effective law such as the Punjab Control of Organised Criminals Act (PCOCA) to deal with the terror spread by organised criminal gangs, an official spokesman said here on Monday. Amarinder had issued strict directions to the police and intelligence agencies to come down heavily on all criminal gangs in the state.

Odisha CM calls on ailing Vajpayee in Delhi

New Delhi, April 24 (IANS): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday called on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his residence here to enquire after his health. He said there is no political significance to his visit. The Chief Minister said he conveyed to Vajpayee’s family that Odia people remember Vajpayee very fondly and conveyed their best wishes for his long life.

Mining mafia issuing death threats: UP Circle officer

Shahjahanpur (UP), April 24 (PTI): Police Circle Officer of Puwayan Arun Kumar on Monday lodged a case against the mining mafia for allegedly issuing death threats to him after he impounded a sand laden tractor trolley here. When he reached home late night, over 20 people on motorcycles arrived there and besides using abusive language issued death threats, the CO claimed, adding that they warned him not to interfere in their work or else he would face grave consequences. Investigations are on, police said, adding efforts were underway to nab the accused.

12 girls of Kasturba school fall ill after eating stale food

Deoria (UP), April 24 (PTI): About 12 students of Kasturba residential school, Barhaj here fell ill after consuming stale food. The girls complained of vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming dinner last night and were rushed to Barhaj Community Health Centre, CDO Rajesh Tyagi said today. The Basic Shiksha Adhikari has been asked to inquire into the matter and directives issued for providing fresh food to the students.

Five persons killed in storm

Krishnagar(WB), April 24 (PTI): Five persons were killed and many thatched houses were damaged in the severe storm that lashed Nadia district, a senior district official said on Monday. Many thatched houses were damaged and electric supply was disrupted at various places including Kalyani and Ranaghat, the officials said.

Asked to pay fee, AP MP’s son and group vandalise toll plaza

Bengaluru, April 24 (PTI): A group of people led by an Andhra Pradesh MP’s son allegedly ransacked and vandalised a toll plaza at Bagepalli in Chikkaballapura district, after they were asked to pay the toll fees. The occupants in the car along with Ambarish showed a pass, saying it exempts them from paying the toll. This led to arguments between them and toll plaza staff and resulted in ransacking and vandalising of the tollgate, police said.
