Mercury climbs in Bihar

Patna, May 3 (PTI): Bihar witnessed rise in summer heat today with Gaya being the hottest district at 42.6 degree celsius. In Patna the mercury touched 40.4 degree celsius up from 38 degrees yesterday, state Met office bulletin said. Temple town of Gaya was the hottest at 42.6 degree celsius.

A rail bridge taller than the Eiffel Tower over the Chenab

New Delhi, May 3 (PTI): In around two years from now, the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir will be spanned by the world’s highest railway bridge that is expected to be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. The massive arch-shaped structure, being constructed at a cost of around Rs 1,100 crore in hostile terrain, will use over 24,000 tonnes of steel and will rise 359 m above the river bed. Designed to withstand wind speeds of upto 260 km per hour, the 1.315 km long “engineering marvel” will connect Bakkal (Katra) and Kauri (Srinagar). Once completed, it will surpass the record of the Beipan river Shuibai railway bridge (275 m) in China.

Army jawan commits suicide in Rajouri along LoC

Jammu, May 3 (PTI): An army jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Laam sector along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Police have registered a case and are investigating into the circumstances that led to the suicide of Lance Naik Vishal Lohar of 54 Rashtriya Rifles last evening. The army has also ordered a court of inquiry (CoI) into episode. The 33-year-old jawan hailed from Karnataka.

Trafficked Bangladeshi woman seeks Modi’s help

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS): A Bangladeshi woman, trafficked to India and forced into prostitution, has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in exchanging old demonetised notes which she had saved while working in a Maharashtra brothel. Rescued from a Pune brothel, the woman has claimed that she was unaware about the government’s November 8 move of demonitisation which she had earned in “desperate conditions”. The woman said she worked in a garment factory in Dhaka before being lured to India on the pretext of a high-paying job where she was sold to a woman for Rs 50,000 who forced her into the sex trade.

Muslim man donates land for construction of ‘gaushala’ in UP

Muzaffarnagar, May 3 (PTI): At a time when cases of cow vigilantism are being reported from across the country, a Muslim man has donated two bighas of land for the construction of a gaushala (cow shelter) here. Welcoming his step, Goel said Ali has transfered the land to the name of Balaji Dham temple.

UP ATS arrests suspected ISI agent from Faizabad

Lucknow, May 3 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh ATS today claimed to have smashed an espionage racket in the state by arresting a suspected ISI agent from Faizabad and picking up another for questioning. This comes days after intelligence inputs had warned of a possible terror attack in the state by ISI-trained terrorists. Aftab is believed to have received training from the ISI in Pakistan and was in constant touch with officials in the Pakistan High Commission, the spokesman said, adding that the ATS was in possession of strong evidence against him. While Aftab was arrested, another suspect was taken into custody and being questioned.

2 arrested for sharing morphed pic of Modi on WhatsApp

Bhatkal (K’taka), May 3 (PTI): Two persons were arrested and subsequently granted bail by a court for sharing a morphed photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a WhatsApp group here, police said today. Krishna Naik, the ‘admin’ of the ‘Balse Boys’ group on WhatsApp, and Ganesh, a member of the group, were arrested on April 24 on the basis of a complaint filed by Anand, another member of the group, Bhatkal Town Police Inspector Suresh Nayak told PTI.
