Moderate intensity earthquake jolts Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec. 7 (IANS): A moderate intensity earthquake occured in Kashmir in the wee hours of Thursday. No report of casualty or damage has come from anywhere so far. “A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 4.59 a.m. today,” sources in the disaster management department said on Thursday. “The epicentre of the quake was near J&K-Xingjian border and its coordinates are latitude 35.5 degrees north and longitude 77.6 degrees east.”

Man burnt alive over ‘love jihad’, accused arrested

Jaipur, Dec. 7 (IANS): A man was arrested in Rajasthan on Thursday for thrashing a person before burning him alive to “save a girl from ‘love jihad’”, officials said. The accused, Shambunath Raigar, also recorded the horrific act which was uploaded on the social media. The incident took place in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district and the video has gone viral. Surprisingly, in another video, which is also going viral, Raigar, is seen justifying his act. He is seen claiming in the video “the act is an endeavour to save a girl from ‘love jihad’”. The video which has gone viral, shows the perpetrator hitting the man with an agricultural tool, pouring kerosene oil on his body and burning him alive. Raigar also warned “those indulging in ‘love jihad’ will meet the same fate”. According to Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, a special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to probe the case.

HC exempts Kejriwal from personal appearance in defamation case

New Delhi, Dec. 7 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Thursday exempted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from personal appearance before a trial court on December 11 in a criminal defamation case filed by Rajya Sabha MP and Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra. Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, however, refused to stay the trial court’s proceedings in the case and posted the matter for January 22. Chandra sought Kejriwal’s prosecution under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kashmir policeman’s brother abducted, released

Srinagar, Dec. 7 (IANS): Militants on Thursday released the brother of a police constable they had abducted a day earlier in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Police said Mudasir Ahmad Khan, the brother of Constable Farooq Ahmad Khan, was seized at gunpoint by the militants on Wednesday evening in Ajas village. He reached home safely on Thursday. The militants had barged into the house of the constable but he was not present. So they took away his brother.

Patient wrongly declared HIV+, closure of hospital sought

New Delhi, Dec. 7 (IANS): In a fresh case of negligence by private hospitals, the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has directed the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to cancel the license of the city’s Neutech Medical Centre where a young man from Uttrakhand was wrongly declared HIV positive. Ahmad had applied for a job in Dubai and the test was part of his fitness requirement. But two subsequent tests in Gurugram and Uttrakhand reported him to be HIV- and perfectly fit. The DGHS was urged to “take stringent action including closure of the Neutech Medical Centre as it is apprehended that such a centre may not be equipped or have proper qualified doctors to run lab tests”, the letter added.

India non-commital on Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

New Delhi, Dec. 7 (IANS): India on Thursday declined to comment on US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying its position on Palestine “is independent and consistent”. The Indian statement comes ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expected visit to India early next year. Trump on Wednesday announced that the US now recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, describing the move as “a long overdue step” to advance the Middle East peace process evoking strong reactions from Arab and European capitals.

Charges framed against 11 ex-MPs in cash-for-query scam

New Delhi, Dec. 7 (IANS): Paving the way for a trial, a court here on Thursday framed charges against 11 former MPs in connection with the 2005 cash-for-query case. After the accused pleaded not guilty, Special Judge Kiran Bansal fixed January 12, 2018 to begin the recording of the statement of prosecution witnesses in the case. The court on August 10 said that prima facie charges dealing with criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act were made out against the accused. Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava alleged that the former Members of Parliament misused their office. They were caught on camera, during a sting operation, seeking money for asking questions in Parliament in what came to be known as cash-for-query scam.

Gujarat student youngest Indian chosen for Antarctica Expedition

New Delhi, Dec. 7 (IANS): A 13-year-old student from Ahmedabad is the youngest Indian to be selected for the prestigious annual Antarctica Expedition organised to spread awareness about the effects of climate change.Aanya is among the 80 people from across the globe to be chosen for the “Climate Force: Antarctica 2018 Expedition” scheduled to be held from February 27 to March 12, 2018 led by Sir Robert Swan — a polar explorer. Aanya, a Class 8 student, is presently studying in Sahyadri School, Pune. The expedition would help Aanya make a change at a community and corporate level and spread awareness about the effects of climate change.

Woman toll employee slapped

Gurugram, Dec. 7 (IANS): A 25-year-old man allegedly slapped a woman toll booth operator here on Thursday after an argument over free passage for his car, police said. Kuldeep Yadav wanted free passage for his car as Shikohpur village is one of 38 villages whose residents are exempt from paying the toll tax. The woman employee said the man got angry when she did not lift the boom barrier to let his vehicle pass. A police case has been filed against the man, Singh said. The CCTV footage of the incident was made available to police. “We are investigating the case,” a police officer said.
