Today, traffic jam is a daily affair that even to travel 2 km distance within the city take sometimes 2 hours or even more i.e. same as the time taken to cover the distance of 74 KM from Kohima to Dimapur. It is an emotional blackmail in our brain where our psyche started to malfunction thinking about when to reach it or sometimes whether to get parking slot or not. It’s been very frustrating days because to attend a functions or meetings or to go to office we’ll have to move out 2 hours ahead of the scheduled timing.

In a place like Kohima and Dimapur where urbanisation is at its peak, with business establishment and expansion of buildings everywhere, the increase of workers in every household, draining of education and population from rural to urban sector, accumulation of wealth with a better livelihood prompted highly in the acquisition of a four wheeler cars in our society through service loan, car loan, and sometimes with a hard earned money. Some go on purchasing as a sign of prestige and for someone as a utility. It’s a need not a want and to strike out from our household chores is inevitable and it’s like letting our precious treasure go out from our hands. It’s not only difficult, but impossible to avoid having been with the culture of driving cars. To opt for either two wheeler or four wheeler cars is a loggerhead situation. But to choose wisely, opting for a two wheeler vehicle is the most urgent need of our time to control traffic jam in our city.

To check the menace of traffic jam in our city is, of course the need to construct a gigantic flyover bridge but it will be a mere dream and nightmare to come into reality due to lack of sanction from the centre or shortage of money in state’s coffer. But for instance at least expansion of bigger road system is necessary and possible in our city by giving proper compensation to the landowners whose lands can be affected. Underground parking system with a big infrastructure building should be constructed in every 3 KM distance in our city meant for parking only. It is also my ardent request to the landowners, whose buildings is under construction on the opposite side of the city streets to allot parking slot in their ground floor buildings which could accommodate at least 3 to 6 vehicles at a time that could results in reducing traffic jam.

A city like Kohima and Dimapur is rapidly expanding with manoeuvring infrastructure and we can see the changes by increasing cars on the streets. Moreover, the road system is not well organised unlike the rest of the country. Our road is very congested with no proper parking slot and the lack of footpaths is the ultimate affects for the pedestrians strolling freely on the road side which is meant for vehicular movement and finally it affects free flow of vehicles on the streets, thereby leading to high voltage drama of traffic jam in our city. On many occasions the road is stranded and stagnated losing all our hopes that we had planned early in the morning for different work. The consequence of this kind of traffic jam is the wasting of our hard earned capital hugely spending on fuel consumption. Proper town planning is on urgent need with a special provision to move cars freely on the streets. Every jalopy cars must be cross check in our city time to time as the old cars produce more sound and more carbon monoxide thus, creating noise and air pollution in our city. Currently, this problem is an imperative issue in order to control fuel emission that causes hazard to our health and environment especially, during our long stay on traffic jam, we inhale carbon monoxide and there is a chance of reducing our life span inevitably.

Hence, except in the case of VIP’s, family gatherings, family outings, taxi services, public transport etc. we should opt for driving two wheeler when we travel alone in order to reduce traffic jam. Whether rich or poor, Class 1 gazetted officers or fourth grade employees, the incumbent should make adaptable to the use of two wheeler vehicle. To sum up, healthy life- healthy driving is important and it is advisable to go for two wheeler culture (generally bikes and bicycles) in order to save our lifespan, time, fuel and money.
