MPSC-A wins Manipur polo tourney

Imphal, March 2: Manipur Police Sports Club-A (MPSC-A) has been adjudged as the champion of the week long 7th Edition of 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament 2017 after beating Khurai Polo Club(KPC) 3-1 in their final match at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest polo-ground in the world on Thursday.
The tourney was organised by Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association (MHRPA) with the support of 57 Mountain Division to develop Polo Tourism in the state and to save Manipuri Pony from near extinction.
The final match was graced by GOC 57 Mtn Div Major General U Suresh Kumar as the chief guest, President S Buddhachandra Singh of MHRPA, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) Major General Virendra Singh and Deputy GOC 57 Mtn Div Brig SKS Chauhan as the guests of honour. In the thrilling final match, H Abung Khuman, S Bimol Singh and M Jawan Singh each scored a goal for MPSC-A while the lone goal for Khurai Polo Club was scored by T Roshan.The Champion team MPSC-A went home richer with a cash prize of Rs 40,000 and championship trophy while the runner-up team KPC walked away with Rs 30000 and trophy. Ten participating teams got consolation cash prize of Rs 2000 each.
Complementing the twelve polo teams which participated in the Polo Tournament, Chief Guest of the function Major General U Suresh Kumar expressed the need to encourage true dedication and sportsmanship shown by all the Polo players of the tournament. Different cultural programmes such as Arambai display, Ghatka display and Lezim dance besides an exhibition match of the traditional Manipuri Polo ‘Sagol Kangjei’ were the main highlights of the day’s closing function.
