Dimapur, June 19 (EMN): Several resolutions to make Mokokchung town “plastic free” by the year’s end were adopted on Tuesday during a meeting of representatives of the 18 wards of Mokokchung municipality.
The meeting was conducted under the aegis of the All Wards’ Union of Mokokchung, the district’s Swachh Bharat Mission ambassadors and the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI).

The meeting was presided over by Mokokchung Municipal Council’s administrator W Manpai Phom. After discussing a wide range of issues, the members adopted several resolutions, the press release stated. They included one to make Mokokchung town “plastic free.”

The organisations have resolved to ban all single-use plastic carry bags in the town with effect from October 2 2019 and to ban the sale of packaged drinking water bottles that are below one litre, by the end of September, the updates stated.

The groups resolved also that that use of plastic bags that are below 50 microns will be strictly prohibited in accordance with standing orders of the government. Punitive fines will be imposed on those who violate the orders, the press release stated.

It was decided that the Mokokchung Municipal Council shall work on the modalities that would be required for implementation of the resolutions. Another matter that the organisations resolved was to “restrict connecting of septic tank outlets to open streams and drains” with immediate effect.

Earlier, the organisations observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect and homage to Vizopal Chaya, state brand ambassador in charge of Phek district who passed away on Saturday, the press release stated.
