Mob lynches Gambhini murder suspect

IMPHAL, November 28

A mob lynched a murder suspect at Tentha Jayenti Wapal under Thoubal Police Station in Thoubal district in the wee hours of Saturday.
Chanambam Ongbi Gambhini Devi, 45, wife of Chanambam Rajen, 52, a resident of Thambal Chingya Cheirao Chingkhong under Kakching Police Station in Thoubal district, was reportedly stabbed to death by the suspect identified as Oinam Amujao, 24, a resident of Wabagai Lamyang Ching in Thoubal on November 26 morning.
Amujao was absconding since the incident until he was found hiding in his house by a large number of locals at about 2 am. He was dragged out of the house by the locals who turned into a mob which lynched him to death at the spot.
Sources informed that the suspect was being subjected to intense questioning following which he confessed to having murdering the woman.
A team of Thoubal Police recovered the body at about 7:30 am from the spot and sent it to the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal for post mortem.
House of the suspect was destroyed by angry locals yesterday. They also tried to torch the it, but the police foiled the attempt. Meanwhile, the body of Gambhini, which had been lying at the JNIMS mortuary, was claimed by the family.
Locals protest
Locals of Warukok Shantipur under Sugnu Police Station today staged a sit-in against arrest of a local man by personnel of 22 Assam Rifles and later branding him as an activist of militant outfit People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak-Progressive (PREPAK-Pro). It is reported that the Assam Rifles personnel posyed at Pangantabi came to the house of Athokpam Anand of Warukok Shantipur in the early hours of November 26 and carried him away asking him to help them in finding the house of a man.
The Assam Rifles later handed him over to the Suhnu Police Station charging him of being a cadre of PREPAK- Pro, the local protesters claimed.
The protestors said Anand was an innocent man who had no any connection with any underground organisation.
They demanded the authority to release him quickly threatening to launch further intense agitation if the demand is not met.
