Militant killed in Manipur encounter

Imphal, Feb 23: One suspected militant was killed while another suspected militant and a woman sustained serious injury in a reported fire fight between troops of 2/5 Gorkha Rifles and some suspected militants in Manipur’s interior Khoupum area in the wee hours of Thursday, sources said.

The incident took place when the security forces were carrying out search operation in and around Khoupum Chingthak village, around 85 km west of Imphal under Khoupum police station in Noney district in between 3:30 to 4:15 am on Thursday, the reports reaching said.
The identities of the deceased militant was yet to be identified while woman victim has been identified as one Ajingna Rongmei (50), wife of Hajengrei who was reportedly hit by bullets on her face, it added. The details of the incident are awaited till the report goes to the press.

Earlier, PTI quoting police report stated that a militant and one civilian were killed during an encounter between suspected ultras and the army in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Thursday. The army was conducting a search operation at Khouphum Chingthak area in Tamenglong district when the suspected militants fired at them at around 3:30 am.

The army returned fire and in the ensuing encounter, a militant and a civilian were killed, a police officer said. The civilian, identified as 50-year-old A Rongmei, was killed in the crossfire, the officer said.

The day’s incident took place barely two days after suspected militants attacked the security teams of the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam during latter’s visit to his native village under Khoupum area under Nungba Constituency for an election related meeting on Tuesday.
