Imphal, Dec 27 (EMN): As part of activities to help Imphal win the top position in the forthcoming Swachh Survekshan 2018, a media workshop was held at the City Convention Centre in Imphal on Wed.
Imphal is taking part in the ranking competition of cities (with more than 1 lakh population) of the country; for the remaining 27 towns in the state among 3041 towns (with less than 1 lakh population) under the Swachh Survekshan 2018, a ranking exercise was taken to assess rural and urban areas for their levels of cleanliness from January-March this year.
The workshop was organised by the directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, in collaboration with Department of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD), and Government of Manipur.
MAHUD Thounaojam Shyamkumar, Director Meghachandra Kongbam of DIPR and Director Nepram Gitkumar Singh of MAHUD attended the function as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honour during the formal inauguration of the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion Minister Shyamkumar reiterated that licence will not be issued to the shops without dustbins, starting from 2018 and sought help from the masses in making Imphal as one of the cleanest city in the country.
Directors Gitkumar (MAHUD) and Meghachandra (DIPR) also spoke on the occasion wherein the cash awards for ‘Mission Imphal Keibul’, a cleanliness competition of the urban local bodies during the recently concluded Manipur Sangai Festival in Nov. this year, were given to Municipal Councils of Kumbi (Rs 80,000), Nambol (Rs 50,000) and Moirang (Rs 30,000).
Three consolation awards containing a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each were also given to Municipal Councils of Bishnupur, Ningthoukhong and Oinam.
Many media persons from both print and electronic media including editors of local vernaculars attended both the day’s inaugural session of the workshop and its discussion session.
Mention may be made that Imphal – one of the 100 Smart Cities to be developed by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, which was placed at 15th rank in the city sanitation ranking of 100 metropolitan cities and capital cities under Swachh Bharat Mission, produces 120 tonnes of solid waste daily. But Imphal was ranked 122nd on the basis of cleanliness and sanitation in the Swachh Survekshan 2017.
