Dimapur, March 13 (EMN): Describing media as ‘eyes and ears’ of citizens, deputy commissioner (DC) and district election officer (DEO), Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, has sought the cooperation of the former in disseminating information to ensure a free and fair Lok Sabha election in the district.

Kevin stated this during a meeting with the press fraternity of Dimapur in his office’s conference hall on March 13. The meeting with press fraternity was the first time after he took over as DC, Dimapur. He expounded on the important role of the media in disseminating information to a wider audience.

Highlighting on the poll preparedness, Kevin informed that Dimapur district has been working in full swing for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls 2019 even before the announcement of election date. He informed that Dimapur will have 335 polling stations with 46 identified as critical and 49 as vulnerable.

Number of voters in Dimapur is two lakh four thousand four hundred and forty eight, he added. He informed that 36 sector officers and 14 Nodal officers have been appointed to take charge of various teams and monitor the election process. He further informed that vehicle requisitioning has already started in Dimapur since March 12 morning.

Media persons representing Nagaland Post, Morung Express, Eastern Mirror, Nagaland Today, Nagaland Page, Telegraph, representatives from electronic news media from DDK and ANI and local cable channels Global Chapter and City Cable were present in the meeting.

DC revises rates of election expenses

In a run-up to the ensuing Lok Sabha election, deputy commissioner (DC) and district election officer (DEO), Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, has revised and fixed the rates pertaining to election expenses.

The fixation and revision of election expenses was made during a meeting with the representatives of various political parties on held on March 13 in the DC’s conference hall, Dimapur.

A DIPR report stated that the DC and DEO, Dimapur, had appealed to the representatives of political parties for minimal use of plastic items/ materials during the election campaigns in order to support the plastic free Nagaland campaign. It added that the appeal was agreed by all the political parties.

ADC Dimapur, Sharon Longchari, who is also the deputy DEO, highlighted on the model code of conduct (MCC) and apprised the representatives of political parties on the guidelines given by ECI for regulating the political parties. She requested all the political parties for ensuring free and fair elections by adhering to the guidelines given in the MCC.

Sharon specifically made it clear about the enforcement of MCC from the date of announcement of election date till the election processes are over. Further, she explained that expenses spent pertaining to social media and paid news would be accounted in the election expenditure and come under MCC guidelines.

In the meeting, AEO Dimapur, Roland Merry, demonstrated on the usage of EVM and VVPAT. Features of Suwidha was also explained in detail and practical demonstration was made through a power point presentation to make the political parties acquaint with the new app. Using this application, party’s representative, candidate  and election agents could apply for various permissions online for election purposes.

Political parties representing NDPP, BJP and DCC attended the meeting.
