Mokokchung, Oct. 9 (EMN): The much awaited MDFA Trophy was kick started in Mokokchung by Zale Nekha, Advisor Youth Resources & Sports as the chief patron at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Tue. Oct. 9.

The first match of the tournament was played between Kumlong Sporting Association and OCYU which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The match started at an equal pace; however, both teams remained locked in a goalless draw till the first break. Entering the second half, OCYU broke the deadlock through Moazulu in the 47th minute.

However, after conceding a goal Kumlong SA launched a vicious counterattack looking for an equaliser. The attempts finally yielded when Imnatoshi scored the equaliser in the 59th minute.

The second half saw some more serious attempts from both the teams; however, the score remained 1-1 till the last minute. Moasanen of OCYU was given the first yellow card of the tournament.

With Tuesday’s match, the MDFA Trophy started in a very high note and the next couple of weeks would witness some high pitched games at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex.

Earlier, the chief patron acknowledged the achievements of Dr T Ao and highlighted about the various programmes introduced by the PDA government to commemorate the centenary celebration of the Naga Olympian.

The advisor also informed that the government is focusing on the development of infrastructure in the field of sports to encourage young talents in the state.

He also highlighted on the Nagaland sports policy and the reservations of job opportunities to sportsperson excelling in the national and international level and also medal winners in different national and international sports events.

Nekha also asserted that the Nagas are second to none in sports and they have the talent to excel, but lamented that due to lack of discipline and proper training, many talented sportspersons remain complacent with small achievements rather than aiming for greater heights.

The welcome address was given by S. Bendang Aier, Convenor, MDFA organising committee. The tournament is organised by Mokokchung District Football Association where 17 football clubs will be vying for the trophy.
