Mokokchung, Oct.17 (EMN): Defending champions Zonipang S/A booked their berth for the quarter-final after crushing OCYU while the dark horse of the tourney Grand Elites secured hope for the quarter-final spot after defeating Unicorn FC and Alempang registered win in the ongoing MDFA Trophy at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on Wed. Oct. 17.

Grand Elites SC, considered to be one of the contenders for MDFA Trophy 2018 thrashed Unicorn FC 2-0 in the first match. L. Temjen of Grand Elites SC continued his goal-scoring spree by scoring two goals in the 26th and 33rd minute of the first half. Unicorn FC struggled throughout the game to score but failed.

With today’s triumph, Grand Elites SC added three wins; they will face SSS Blue in the fourth league match on Oct. 20. Nevertheless, Grand Elites SC has secured their quarter-final spot in the tourney.

In the second match, Zonipang SA humiliated OCYU 2-0. The defending champions proved too strong for the OCYU players. Suponglemba and Nungshisashi of Zonipang scored the two goals in the 15th and 49th minute.

Zonipang has won all three league matches and has emerged as the winner of Pool A, they will be accompanied by Y/A Marepkong from their pool.

In the last match, Alempang YA beat Hills XI FC 3-1. All three goals were scored in the first half of the game by Tayongmaong, Yangerjungba and Imkongyanger in the 13th, 14th and 24th minute. Moaakum of Hills XI FC scored the lone goal in the 57th minute.

With just one win game in the league matches, Alempang YA failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. Hills XI FC also is out of the tournament with two losses and a draw in the league matches.
