Kohima, May 18 (EMN): In an effort to combat the menace of plastic pollution, a cleanliness drive along Sonouru River in Kohima will be conducted on May 25.

The cleanliness drive is a part of The Himalayan Cleanup (THC) campaign of Integrated Mountain Initiative and Zero Waste Himalayas. This year’s theme is ‘our mountain deserves better.’

It will begin from 7 am at Sonouru River near T Khel gate and cover till Sonouru Bridge (Secretariat Road) in Kohima.

The drive is being spearheaded by Kohima Village Youth Organisation, along with Kohima village, Green Team Kohima (Project 72, The Coming Generation, YARD and individuals), KCCI and KMC.

Altogether, six districts/regions including Mokokchung, Dimapur, Chumukedima, Mon, Kohima, and Zunheboto have confirmed participation in THC in their respective areas, on the same day. This was announced by the convener of THC, LH Thangi Mannen at a press interaction held here at KVYO office in Kohima on May 18.

Usually the Himalayan clean up happens on May 26, but has been rescheduled to May 25 (Saturday) as the 26th falls on Sunday this year, she said.

According to Mannen, the drive has been initiated ‘to beat plastic pollution through segregating waste and audit brands.’

Waste collected during the cleanliness drives will be assessed for its quantity, types of waste, and other details. A report on the assessment will be send to Integrated Mountain Initiative for further review, she added.

The president of KVYO, Dzüvinguzo Mepfhuo said that 500 volunteers are expected to turn up at the cleanliness drive in Kohima. The aim of the drive is to segregate waste and audit brand or to determine which brand is polluting the environment to maximum, he added.

A representative of Green Team, Kohima said that people’s participation is required to beat plastic pollution.

Interested organisations, agencies, and individuals have been invited to contact any of the organisers for participation.
