Kohima, Sep. 24 (EMN): Gideon Leo scored three goals as Friends United New Market team thrashed Thurutsuswumi Students Union 5-1 during the ongoing 19th NSF Martyrs’ memorial trophy organised by Angami Students’ Union on Monday.

Gideon Leo’s hat-trick and Thejaselie Terhuja’s brace was enough for the team to register a convincing victory over Phek team during their first match in the tournament.

Gideon Leo who is in top form this year playing for New Market FC registered his entry into the NSF trophy by scoring a hat-trick for Friends United team.  His goal came in the 9th, 30th and 61st minute, while Thejaselie Terhuja scored in the 28th minute and 81st minute.

Verazo of Thurutsuswumi scored a consolation goal in the 32nd minute but that was it as the team was battered by the likes of individual player Gideon Leo during the match.

Up next, Friends United will now take on Monsang Students Union, Manipur in the next round on Oct. 1.

While in the second match, Kohima Science College defeated Lower Jail Youth Organisation 4-2 via penalty shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

LWYO goalkeeper Temsukokba made some crucial saves in the first half for the team to keep the team pushing for the goal but a minute of brilliance from Kheleto Zutso’s header gifted KSC the lead.

KJC winger B Hruzhukho cross found the striker Kheleto Zutso inside the area as he headed home in the 40th minute to give the lead for Kohima Science College.

In the second half, SJC were comfortably dominating the game but Sancho gave the lifeline in the 76th minute when he headed the equaliser through Kevingoto’s cross and the match ended in a stalemate.

During the penalty shootout, the goalkeeper of SJC Allong made two crucial saves to help the team win 4-2 and knock their opponent out of the tournament.

The win means KJC will now face Tiema Khe Kidima on October 2 in the next round.
