Manipur remembers Maharaja Gambhir Singh on his 184th death anniversary

Imphal, Jan. 9 (EMN): The 184th death anniversary of the Maharaja Gambhir Singh was observed under the aegis of State Archaeology, Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur, at the Samadhi of Maharaja Gambhir Singh at Langthabal near Imphal on January 9.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, minister of art and culture L Jayantakumar Singh, minister of consumer affairs Karam Shyam, minister of education Th Radheshyam, chairman of MANIDCO Dr. Y Radheshyam, MLAs Y Surchandra, S Subhaschandra, P Brojen, S Bira Singh, Y Surchandra, L Susindro Meitei, top civil and police officials and others attended the function.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister has assured to develop a museum inside the premises of the Samadhi to enlighten the youth and present generation about the supreme sacrifices made by the forefathers during the seven years war (1819-1826) to liberate Manipur from the clutches of the Burmese.

Biren has urged the concerned minister and officials of the Art and Culture Department to discuss with a reputed international firm or consultant for the development and to beautify the place. He also urged the concerned department to install the statues of Nara Singh and Herachandra inside the Samadhi of Maharaja Gambhir Singh.

Delivering presidential address during the day’s observation, minister of Art and Culture Jayantakumar Singh said that the role of the government is to protect the territorial integrity and to uphold the sovereignty of the state. Impressing upon the responsibility of the government to work for the welfare of the people of the state, he said the government needs love, support and participation of the people to bring inclusive development in the state. He maintained that every issue could be resolved through dialogues.

Earlier, the chief minister led others in paying floral tributes to the portraits of Maharaja Gambhir Singh and Nara Singh. A contingent of Manipur Rifles offered a guard of honour and general salute besides observing two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the Gambhir Singh, Nara Singh and others.
