Manipur politics: Congress MLA joins BJP

Imphal, April 17 (EMN): In what could be termed as a new political development three days after report of Manipur health minister L Jayentakumar’s resignation hit the social network, one Congress MLA joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition government on Monday.
Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh and BJP Manipur President K Bhabananda led party ministers and leaders welcomed Ginsuanhau, a sitting Congress MLA from Singhat constituency in Manipur’s Churachandpur district during a brief reception gathering at the party office here this evening.
In the day’s reception, 14 autonomous district council members of Chandel district also formally joined the party.
Though Health and Family welfare minister L Jayentakumar had submitted his resignation letter citing ‘interference’ to his authority, a month after being sworn in as the minister, on April 13, HE continued to attend official function as a minister till Sunday last. Jayentakumar was elected from Keishamthong constituency in Imphal West district.
However Biren who was sworn in as chief minister on March 15 along with eight other ministers, including Jayentakumar, is yet to accept the resignation, reports claimed.
Jayentakumar also holds Art and Culture And Law Affairs portfolio in the one month old BJP led coalition government, in which National People’s Party and Naga people’s Front are the major partners with four MLAs each. Other partners of BJP (21) government are LokJansakhti party (1), Independent (1), Independent (1) and Congress (1).
In another development, NPP President Conard Sangma who flew in here on Monday to take stock of the situation has started to discuss the new political development with the party leaders including the party MLAs.
