Manipur police personnel seizes local liquor

Imphal, Sep. 28 (EMN): In view of the upcoming 5th General Panchayat elections in Manipur, the state police continue to conduct massive liquor drive in the state since the last few days.
On Thursday, four teams of Thoubal district police stationed at Pallel police station under the Officer in Charge Ng Anthony Singh of Pallel Police station rounded up ten individuals including three women along with 242 litres of country made local liquor and 28 Myanmar made foreign liquor bottles,11 kilograms of yeasts, 15 number of bigger utensils and materials used for manufacturing local liquor from 10 different locations in around the police station.
Few days ago, the state excise Department has destroyed liquor worth Rs 20 lakhs ahead of the local body elections which is scheduled for October 7.Excise’s nodal officer I Jatishwor said they have destroyed more than 3,000 liters of IMFL and 1,000 liters of distilled indigenous country liquor.
Meanwhile hectic preparations are on for the panchayat elections wherein altogether 4,031 candidates, including 216 candidates for Zila Parishad, 511 for Pradhans and 3204 for ward members were contesting from Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Jiribam, Kaching and Thoubal districts.
It may be mentioned here that a total of 7,16,813 voters including 3,48,139 males and 3,68,691 females are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 60 Zila Parishad members, 161 Pradhans and 1,513 ward members.
