Imphal, April 23 (EMN):
Manipur celebrated a memorial called Khongjom day at the Khongjom War memorial site, located at Kheba Hillock about 35 km to the south of Imphal on Monday.

Khongjom Day is observed annually on April 23 as a state level function to pay tributes to the brave soldiers of Manipur who made sacrifices in the last battle of independence, popularly known as ‘Khongjom War,’ against the British on April 23 1891.

The governor of Manipur, Dr Najma Heptulla and Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh attended the event as chief guests. They recalled the history of Khongjom War by reminding the gathering about how the brave soldiers of those days stood and fought against the British who had occupied half of the world. They also appealed to every community living in the state to work together for a united and progressive Manipur by respecting one another.

Terming the recent rise in crime against women and children in the state as a ‘matter of serious concern,’ Heptulla expressed her desire to address and eradicate such issues for public interest. She stated that such problem has delayed the pace of development. She appealed to develop a ‘progressive Manipur’ where everybody lives a decent life.

“Let us all take the decision on this historic day to work together to make our state number one state in the country,” said Heptulla.
