Sendra,Manipur, June 6 (EMN): Tree plantation was conducted along the road leading to popular Sendra tourist resort located at Loktak, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast on World Environment Day.
During the plantation drive, local MLA and Chairman of Planning and Development Authority (PDA) T Robindro and volunteers of Sendra Youth Club (SYC) planted more than 100 different varieties of trees on the bank of Loktak Lake. IMG 20170606 WA0031
“We’re trying to educate our villagers through such kind of small but meaningful initiatives so that our surrounding and environment could be kept clean and green which has now becomes one of the important tourist spot in the region,” says a key campaigner Kh Budha.
Sendra, a small village at Loktak located about 45 km south of Imphal is a popular tourist and picnic spot in Manipur.
Hundreds of tourists visit here on a daily basis to enjoy the beauty of Loktak and also the Lake provides livelihood to thousands of people since time immemorial.
The site becomes a dumping site of waste not only by the visitors but also by the residents because of absence of proper waste management system in the locality. Considering the public requirement, residents of Ithing Sendra came out and started a public campaign.
To commemorate World Environment Day ‘Run for Fun’ competition for youths was organised at Tamenglong by Tamenglong Battalion under the aegis of Red Shield Division in collaboration with Rain Forest Club on June 5. Commandant of Tamenglong Battalion flagged off the competition on 05 Jun 2017 at 0715 hrs.
A total of 150 children along with three Officers and 25 personnel of the unit participated.
Forests & Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today flagged off a cycle rally on the theme ‘Recycle for Greener Tomorrow’ Loktak Development Authority (LDA) Office at Secure Office Complex, Imphal.
The rally was organised by LDA in partnership with Toubul Youth Development Association, Global Science Club Khoijuman , Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science
On the occasion of World Environment Day, an awareness and cleanliness drive was conducted under the aegis of Nambol Municipal Council, Maibam Army Post of 5 JAK RIF and Nambol police station at Nambol in Bishnupur District on Monday.
In another initiative, Mayang Imphal COB of 5 JAK RIF also organised a poster making competition on environment theme.
