Manipur media and Imphal authorities meet to discuss polls

Imphal, Jan. 11: An interaction with the media fraternity from both the print and electronic was held under the aegis of the deputy commissioner of Imphal West in connection with the forthcoming 11th

State Legislative Assembly Election at Komberei Hall here on Tuesday.

During the interactive session, key points under Model Code of Conduct, SAMADHAN, SUVIDHA, SUGAM, Election Expenditure Monitoring Mechanism and paid news were discussed in-depth with the media fraternity.

As per the information given by the nodal officer of SAMADHAN, Ph Bhavananda, almost 231 complaints have been registered so far, out of which 210 have been disposed and 21 still pending.

The nodal officer of SUGAM, RK Jayantakumar, also stressed on the management of vehicles using application software to ensure transparency and proper management of vehicles for election purpose.

M Kubiheiba Meitei, the nodal officer of SUVIDHA, highlighted the important points that SUVIDHA software will help political parties in getting permission for rallies and public meetings without hassles.

The nodal officer for expenditure, Salam Somorendro, explained that the cut-off limit for expenditure for the coming election of a candidate contesting in the election for the state should not exceed 20 lakhs.

During the discussions, the issue of paid news was also analysed. The DEO appealed to the media fraternity to cooperate in curbing and prohibiting publication of such materials.

The nodal officer for media communications, Kishan Longjam, elaborated on the important aspects of paid news starting from its basic definition to its most critical aspects.

The superintendent of Imphal West, N Herojit Meetei, also said in a statement to the media persons that measures of monitoring liquor, intoxicants, narcotics, arms and unaccounted cash in relation to election has increased after the Code of Conduct came into effect on January 4.

Also, the DEO, of Imphal West district, thanked the media persons for actively participating in the interaction programme by raising important issues pertaining to free, fair and peaceful elections.
