Manipur jails actively involved in reforming inmates

IMPHAL, JULY 22: Manipur Jail Department has taken up various reformative measures for the inmates at the two jails of the state, Manipur Central Jail, Imphal and Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa  to enable the prisoners to come back to normal life after their release from Jail and also to improve their quality of life said, according to P Doungel, Addl DGP Manipur.

Speaking to media here, he said Yoga activities are done in both the jails and to help improve the overall health of the prisoners Gym activities are also done with the body building equipments  donated by ANIMAL GYM for the prisoners of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa  . The Gym is improved by the Jail Department regularly.   About 180 prisoners are actively going to the Gym every day.

The Gym has improved the health of many while giving a positive outlook at life.

The male prisoners in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa are taught the art of making of Plastic bags and plastic morah (sitting stools) so as to enable them to earn their livelihood .  Female inmates lodged in Manipur Central Jail, Imphal are imparted tailoring and embroidery training by rotation under the supervision of expert Instructors sponsored by the Social Welfare Department.

The method of making of dhoop, dolls and making of dish washing detergent powder and liquid is also imparted to the female inmates so that they can earn their livelihood after their release from Jail.  There is Painting section , Music room for the inmates.  Primary/Basic education to the illiterate inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Imphal is carried out by a teacher of Jail Department so that the inmates may be able to read and write when they leave the Jail.

An IGNOU Special Study Centre has been started in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa since 29/11/2011.  Both the Jails have a Legal Aid Clinic Cell which caters to the need of the inmates.

Various programmes and classes for spiritual upliftment, gardening are encouraged. Library has also been set up for providing reading facilities to the inmates.   P Doungel said, “we love the prisoners, so we require counseling of the inmates as most of them suffer from depression” The Jail staff is doing its best taking preventive measures to avoid unwanted incidents by the life convicts and other categories of prisoners who have deep depression and suicidal tendencies particularly due to the Supreme Court’s Order dated 9/7/2014 which states that “the State Governments are restrained from exercising powers of remission to life convicts”.
