Manipur IMA to join nationwide strike

Imphal, June (EMN): The Indian Medical Association, (IMA) of Manipur state branch will be joining the nationwide strike today with withdrawal of non-essential health services across the country in the wake of the recent assault on doctors in West Bengal.

There will be services closure of out-patient department services and routine operations while emergency and indoor service will remain unaffected and continue to function, a statement from IMA Manipur said.

Speaking to reporters, IMA President Dr. Shyamkumar Laishram said the withdrawal of services is to show solidarity to show solidarity with doctors in West Bengal and support the demand for a special legislation to make assault on doctors a non-bailable offence.

IMA has been demanding a national law against hospital violence, he added.

“He said doctors are also human beings; they chose a profession to serve people and not to harm their patients” he said.

World Medical Association has also passed a resolution against violence on healthcare establishments and urged to bring stronger legislation against this menace.

In solidarity to the IMA, Shija Hospitals also announced that there will be no routine OPDs and Operations from 6 am of June 17 to 6 am of June 18.

“Shija Hospitals is taking part in the country wide protest demanding a national law against hospital violence,” said Deputy Manager (Business Development) Takhellambam Premkumar in a press release.
