Imphal, Jan. 16: Manipur Governor Dr Najma A Heptullah on Monday said that the initiative taken up by Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) by involving young children, was a good step in ‘safeguarding their future.’
Urging students to use alternative sources of energy whenever feasible, Governor Dr Heptullah said, natural resources such as petroleum products have been used in the past ‘without consideration for the future generation.’
The governor was attending the inaugural function of Saksham 2017, a month-long conservation and festival that was held at Hotel Classic Grande here under the theme “Conservation of Fuel is Responsibility of One and All in Society”.
The governor also administered a pledge to the participants, which included students, to conserve petroleum products, endeavour to educate young people to avoid wasteful use of petroleum products and use cleaner fuels for environment protection.
In his speech, Manipur’s Chief Secretary Oinam Nabakishore Singh who attended the event as its guest of honour, urged the people to consciously use natural resources such as oil and gas. He said that the state government had already started solar energy schemes.
The state government is targeting to generate 50 Mega Watt power by 2022 to fulfil all energy needs, he added. As part of the day’s observation, Governor Dr Heptullah flagged off a “walk rally” attended by students from various schools, officials from Indian oil corporations, traders, and dealers.
The month-long festival observed across the country will conclude on February 15 next.
The features of the festival include Saksham Asian cycling championship, Saksham driving contest, walkathon at petrol / LPG outlets, Saksham quiz competition, district level conservation concert and ‘bicycle day.’
The day’s function was organized by public sector oil and gas companies in the state in association with PCRA under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.
