Manipur: Faulty designs of road causes 10% of road accidents, says PWD chief engineer

IMPHAL, June 10 (EMN): Faulty designs of road causes 10% of road accidents as the curriculum of the engineering course exclude the current topic, said Manipur PWD Chief Engineer Kh Temba.

Speaking at the inaugural programme of a training programme on road safety in Imphal on Monday, the chief engineer said there is one death every four minutes due to a road accident in India.

Two wheelers account for 25% of total road crash deaths, he added.

To develop safe road while making good roads, Manipur Public Works Department (PWD) is organising five-day training for engineers in imphal.

Inaugurating the programme, PWD Additional Chief Secretary Suhel Akhtar expressed the need to organise a combined training programme including other departments.

Director (Road Safety) SM Sarin said that the idea of organising the training programme is to develop safe road (designs) while developing good roads.

“I hope once the training is provided there would be improvement in making detail project reports for making roads considering the global concern over the numbering road accidents,” he said.

Responding to a question on best roads in north-eastern states, he claimed that roads in Guwahati and Shillong are developed with more funds from Ministry of transport.

The Imphal-Moreh and Imphal-Mao sector of the highways will be the good highways once the ongoing development works under Ministry of Transport and Asian development bank are completed, he said.

PWD which is maintaining around 10,000 roads in Manipur, has been taking care of potholes on the highways despite having fund crunch, he added.
