Imphal, June 12 (EMN): The Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh informed that the state government will be taking up large scale agar plantation in Manipur on Monday. For this, the government has acquired ten lakh agar plants besides lemon grass and other fruit bearing trees as an alternative for farmers who once illegally cultivated poppy plants.
The chief minister informed about the plan during his speech at the inaugural function of the two-day state level workshop about collaborative approach to build awareness, communicate best practices, and build the capacity of stakeholders to adapt to the changing climate scenario in Imphal on Monday.
The workshop was organised by the Manipur Forum for Sustainable Mountain Development in collaboration with the state climate cell of the environment directorate with the “understanding mountain people’s approach and practices for climate change adaptation.”
Referring to the streams drying up in Shirui areas of Ukhrul and some parts in Tamenglong, Singh said, “It is not possible to develop water supply plants by investing a huge amount of money if we do not have the water resources.”
Singh appealed to the people not to stick to the local customary laws in today’s era of climate change but to ‘change the mindsets of rigidness,’ and to take up adaptation process for sustainable eco-system services.
Experts from diverse fields including village, church, NGO leaders, officials, and others also made presentation on natural resources, agriculture and livelihood, health and sanitation, and Climate change action plans.
