Kohima, June 24 (EMN): With a call to generate awareness on sanitation and sensitise residents on cleanliness, the sanitation committee of New Market in Kohima has launched a litter-free campaign at its Panchayat Hall on June 23.
During the event, the chairman of New Market Panchayat, Ruokuobeizo Nyusou formally declared the colony as ‘litter-free zone’ and urged the citizens to cooperate, work together and contribute towards the cleanliness of the capital town.
He informed that the litter-free zone program was a part of government policy and the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) would inspect the locality every six months and reward the cleanest colony among the 19 wards under Kohima.

The chairman also stressed on the need to create awareness on cleanliness to the schools in the colony. He encouraged the gathering to approach others to clean up their environment, if they see anyone dropping litter so that everyone may benefit, adopt and implement good examples.

While stating that cleanliness begins at home, the chairman appealed to all to stop littering and start the practice of cleanliness from their family.
“Let’s keep ourselves healthy, follow government policy and be influencers to lead by setting good examples,” Nyusou said.

Joint secretary for Land Resources Development, Kovi Meyase, who also spoke on the occasion, asked the sanitation committee to sensitize shopkeepers to have sufficient waste bins. He also asked them to approach the All Nagaland Tai Association to provide taxi drivers with dustbins as most of the complaints of littering come from the taxi stand under the colony jurisdiction.

He further encouraged the committee to organise more such awareness programs in future as well.
Vice-chairman New Market Panchayat, Zerüzo Suohu extended appreciation for the litter-free program.

The sanitation committee distributed banners and hoardings some of which read ‘I love my New Market, please keep our colony litter-free’, ‘Cleanliness and good sanitation in schools is a matter of high importance’, ‘The objective of cleaning is not just to clean but to feel happiness living within the environment’ etc. to be installed at various locations in the colony.
