Local college takes a dip into science conclave

Dimapur, Feb 24 :Kohima Science College also joined in a science event in Gujarat recently with their “research ideas” among other eminent personalities from the field of science. The Science Club of Kohima Science College Students’ Union issued a press release on Friday informing about the event.
The science event Nobel Prize Series India was organized by the department of Biotechnology of the government of India was held during January 9th-13th at Science City Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The event for this year’s event was themed “Science impact lives.”
The event aims to bring together Nobel Laureates, Indian scientists and other eminent scientists from around the world together to impart scientific thinking, a pres release from the college informed on Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nobel Prize Laureates from different fields and disciplines across the world attended the event, it was informed. “Along with other young scientists and researchers across India, two student researchers from Kohima Science College, autonomous, (in) Jotsoma, attended the Nobel Prize Series India 2017 with their research ideas,” the press release stated.
The first research concept, the press release stated, was ‘Enhancement of Secondary Growth in Dicotyledonous Stem’ by Zenwang Konyak of first year B.Sc. It stated: “The enhancement of secondary growth in dicotyledonous stem mainly aims to enhance the cell division of the cambium which helps in the proper growth of the plant stem increasing in girth/thickness of a plant through a process by injecting the prepared chemical substance.”
The second was “To Extract Water or Latex from Dicotyledonous Stem by inserting Absorption Devices” by Peihauding of second-year B.Sc.
“The extracted material is 100% purely organic which can be beneficial for making medicines and in various fields. The extraction by inserting absorption devices also reduces the cutting down of tress which is a great cause of Global warming,” the press release stated.
The two students from Kohima Science College were each given a certificate and medal for their innovative research ideas, the press release added.
