Literature reflects the level of civilisation, says Manipur gov.

Imphal, June 24 (EMN): The 84th foundation day and the 83rd annual sitting of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad (MSP) came to an end by holding an award presentation ceremony at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium Palace Compound in Imphal on Sunday.

The governor of Manipur Dr. Najma Heptulla, was the chief guest of the event; Arts and Culture minister, L Jayentakumar as guest of honour; and president of MSP, Prof. Kangjam Ibohal Singh, as functional president.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Heptulla said, “literature reflects the level of civilisation. The human society attains and constitutes an eloquent index to gauge the march of human progress intellectually and materially.”

Asserting that MSP is an organisation of iconic stature, devoted to the development of Manipuri language, literature, and culture, the governor stated that it has come a long way since 1935 when the idea of establishing the organisation was born. “Since then, it has led a chequered life working tirelessly to promote and propagate Manipuri language and literature,” she added.

The governor reminded the key role played by Parsihad in the movement for inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India and said that since then the language found a place in the list of Indian languages recognized by the Sahitya Akademi.

Minister Jayentakumar handed over a cheque of INR 5 lakh to the MSP. The awards including upadhis, gold medal, and cash prizes were distributed to 32 awardees in diverse fields.
