Legislator vouches for young leaders in politics

Dimapur, Dec. 16 (EMN): Without undermining the older leaders, parliamentary secretary of social welfare Merentoshi Jamir has vouched for young people in politics. According to Merentoshi it becomes difficult to communicate as they belong to different generation even in the assembly.

With six young legislators comprising 10% of the total legislators for the first time in the history of Nagaland, Jamir has hoped to see more of young blood in the ensuing assembly.

Jamir said this while addressing at the 5th session of North East India International Model United Nations (NEIMUN) conference 2017 on the theme ‘United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250-Youth, Peace and Security’ on December 16 held at Don Bosco Institute, Dimapur.

While reaffirming his commitment to work for the welfare of the youth, he urged upon the youth to be bold and speak out what they wanted. He was also of the view that voices of the youth should be taken into consideration while determining the final settlement of the Indo-Naga political talks.

“Youth are the change makers who have the power to elect the person to be in power. Are we ready to utilise the power vested on the youth,” querried Jamir.

“You are gathered here with a conviction so prepare a resolution with a target which will work in four to five years and let this conference come out as an action oriented plan,” Jamir added.

Drawing attention of the gathering on use of social media, Jamir advised to be cautious and not spread negative message. He has urged the youth to use their intelligence and spread good message for the overall development of the society.

Jamir has also advocated ‘peace’ for social change in the society. With peace prevailing in the society, Jamir said Nagaland can be a role model in the northeast region. He added that peace is necessary to enable multi-national companies to invest in the state.

Jamir has also expressed concern over increasing incidences of violence against women and children in the Naga society.

Peace Channel Director Dr. Fr. CP Anto, speaking on ‘Shaping change’ pointed out that there is a generation gap between the third and fourth generations. He reminded the youth to bridge the gap and bring about changes in the society.

NEIMUN Conference 2017 themed ‘UNSCR 2250-Youth, Peace and Security’ was envisioned to bridge gap through dialogues to the world most critical and pertinent issues. UNSCR 2250 affirms young people’s important role in the prevention and resolution of conflicts and stresses the importance of engaging youth as partners and leaders in peace-building and its processes.
