Law students receive insights on Lokayukta

Dimapur, Aug. 17 (EMN): Kohima Law College conducted an awareness programme on the topic “Know Your Rights & Entitlement” at Don Bosco College, Kohima, on Aug. 16.

The Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Oganisation President, Kezhokhoto Savi spoke about Lokayukta. He stated that he had appealed the state government to honour the Supreme Court direction given to the Govt. of Nagaland to set up Lokayukta in Nagaland.

Speaking about Lokayukta, he said that it is a sort of anti-corruption act that looks into the complaints of the people and suggest measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the government.

The establishment of this institution in the state was to provide clean, transparent, and accountable government of the people. The Lokayukta Bill was passed by the Parliament to fight against corruption, the press release added.

The main objective of Lokayukta was to curb the menace of corruption within states. When individual or a citizen have complaints against any public servant relating to corruption, mal-administration, favoritism, illegal deduction of public fund etc, the grievance person can approach Lokayukta to looks into such matters and carry out investigation.

Lokayukta is considered to be one of the most powerful institutes in the country. Its function largely depends upon jurisdiction being vested, the press stated.

Some of the other topics being discussed during the programme included Consumer Rights, Food Safety and Standard Act, Lokayukta, National Food Security Act, Environment, Human Rights, State Consumer Helpline Toll Free No. 1800-345-3701, Street Vendors Act 2014, and Public Services Act.
