Kohima police lands 15, 000 kgs of Pangolin scales, Ginseng

Kohima district’s enforcement personnel had a wonderful Friday when on the day, May 29, they filtered out of the traffic nothing less than at least 500 kilograms of a species of Ginseng and at least 10, 000 kilograms of Pangolin scales. The enforcement personnel made the catch and added to the arrest list six persons, including three women. On May 29, police personnel of Khuzama police station conducted mobile checking duties along the Chakhabama road near Dzu-u River. The enforcement personnel stopped three vehicles namely an Eon, and two Mahindra vehicles. The Eon was registered as ‘AS-01-AX-5887’, on Mahindra Bolero as ‘NL-01H-2241’ and the other had the registration ‘NL-02C-4671’.
The enforcement personnel found from the vehicles 502 kilograms of a species of ginseng worth Rs.25 lakhs and 10, 008 kilograms of Pangolin scales. The worth of the animal’s scales was estimated by the police at approximately Rs.15 lakhs in the international market.
Six persons have been arrested in connection with the smuggling. They have been identified as:
• one Kayia, 32 years, of Senapati district in Manipur, and a resident of Seluophe Model village in Dimapur
• one Laha, 27 years, of Senapati district in Manipur
• one Lolia, 58 years, of Senapati district in Manipur
• one N. Nepuni, 19 years, of Senapati district in Manipur and a resident of Nagarjan in Dimapur
• one Heni Mao, 43 years, of Senapati district in Manipur
• one A Kholie, 23 years, of Senapati district in Manipur
They have been charged with violation of the Indian Forest Act R/W 51 (1) and Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the authorities informed.
In another incident, on May 29, police personnel from south police station of Kohima conducting mobile checking duties at the Classic Point in the capital town Kohima chased down a black Mahindra Scorpio (NL-02C-3160) from Chandmari colony. The enforcement personnel found about 30 cases of assorted liquor from the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as one Santosh Kumar, 38 years, from Motarampur village in Chapara district of Bihar. He was arrested and charged for violation of the Nagaland Liquor Total prohibition Act, police said. He has been forwarded to judicial custody.
