Kohima, June 25 (EMN): The second edition of Kohima District Inter-School Football Tournament got underway here after a ceremonious inaugural function Monday afternoon at Khouchiezie Ground in Kohima.

A total of 30 teams from 25 private schools and five government institutions under Kohima district are participating in the 13-day tournament, which is being organised by Royal Club Kohima in collaboration with departments of School Education, and Youth Resources and Sports.

Legislator Khriehu Liezietsu, who graced the inaugural day as a patron, said it was heartening to see many enthusiastic school students gearing up to participate in the tournament. Observing that football in Nagaland appeared to have taken a backseat for sometime, he said this could be attributed to various factors including marketing and lack of infrastructure.

Liezietsu highlighted how the organisers, Royal Club, had through their erstwhile tournament ‘Royal Gold Cup’ exhibited and promoted a high class football to the people of Nagaland and neighbouring states. The said championship was the only tournament to be affiliated with the All India Football Federation, he remarked.

The legislator was appreciative of the Royal Club for having revived the tournament despite challenges, with a new vigour to focus on the younger generation. He expressed hope that the tournament would see the rise of young promising players, while also calling upon the students to not see the tournament as a platform for competition but of sportsmanship and unity.

Before the tournament’s opening match kicked off, the Royal Club paid tribute to late Xavier Rutsa, who passed away on June 11 last. The entire audience including players and the organisers stood and observed two minutes of silence in honour of Rutsa, who was a sports aficionado and had contributed much to the growth of sports in the state through his writing as well as participation.
